Just past the edge of town

Some of the best of Central Texas is a short drive from Austin. A few worth the gas.

The Hill Country & Dripping Springs

Rolling hills, wineries, and distilleries start just west of town. Dripping Springs is the gateway; nearby Hamilton Pool Preserve is a stunning collapsed-grotto swimming hole (reservations required, and swimming depends on water quality).

Fredericksburg

A German-heritage town about 90 minutes west, known for its Main Street, wineries along Highway 290, and peaches in summer.

Wimberley

A small Hill Country town with two famous swimming spots — Jacob's Well and Blue Hole — both reservation-based in season.

Lockhart

The "Barbecue Capital of Texas," about 40 minutes south — a classic Central Texas barbecue crawl.

Bastrop & the Lost Pines

East of Austin, Bastrop's "Lost Pines" are an isolated stand of loblolly pines with a state park and a historic downtown. Our friends at Lost Pines Guide have the full rundown.
